Atlantic Ocean & Chesapeake Bay Fishing ReportBy Capt. Jim Brincefield d/b/a "Jil Carrie" Charter FishingToday we did a private charter trip for Gardner Niskey amd his guest for a total of 2 anglers. This was our second Atlantic Ocean Spadefish trip of the 2008 campaign. We fished at the Chesapeake Light Tower. Once again, there were only a few boats there and nobody was catching. We fished there for a few hours and caught a few undersized Black Sea Bass (released), and had a couple of good fish break off and/or run off a bunch of line and get in the structure. But the big news was that we caught our first Spadefish of the 2008 campaign (see below picture) - WOO HOO!!! I know, it's only one, but it's a start! We caught our Spadefish with cut pieces of Chowder Clams fished from a fish finder egg sinker rig.
So, once again, our "Plan B" was to try the small boat channel of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel in The Chesapeake Bay where we had great success on our last 2 trips. It was another great bite there as we loaded one coolers with fat, juicy, succulent Atlantic Croaker ("Hardhead") destined for the frying pan! We also caught a small Bluefish which we released. We caught our fish using Fishbites, cut Squid, and Chowder Clam pieces for bait - all fished from standard bottom rigs.MAY 26, 2008 Atlantic Ocean & Chesapeake Bay Fishing Report
By Capt. Jim Brincefield d/b/a "Jil Carrie" Charter FishingToday we did a private charter trip for Mr. Ramon Kent and friends for a total of 12 anglers. This was our first Atlantic Ocean Spadefish trip of the 2008 campaign. Capt. Timothy P. Cannon of Virginia Beach, VA served as 1st Mate. We fished at the Chesapeake Light Tower. I should have known when we arrived and there were only 3 boats there that nothing was happening. Usually, on Memorial Day, there would be an armada of hundreds of the unwashed masses swarming the structure like flies on... well you know. We lost a couple of baits, caught 1 undersized Black Sea Bass (released), had one unknown good sized fish run off a bunch of line and get in the structure, and that was it. We did not see any Spadefish or catch any Spadefish. Water Temperature was 65 at the Tower, so they should have been there. It's been a cold, windy Spring this year, so maybe they are running late? So, our "Plan B" was to try the small boat channel of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel in The Chesapeake Bay where we had great success on our last trip. It was another great bite there as we loaded the coolers with fat, juicy, succulent Atlantic Croaker ("Hardhead") destined for the frying pan! We also caught a few Oyster Toads (a/k/a "Mother In Law Fish" - "MILF"), several undersized Black Sea Bass (all released), 1 hideous Conger Eel, 1 undersized Flounder (released), 2 Clearnosed Skates, and 1 slot Striped Bass ("Rockfish" ) which was 30.5 inches (released) . We caught our fish using Fishbites, cut Croaker, and Chowder Clam pieces for bait - all fished from standard bottom rigs. Although we didn't catch our targeted Spadefish "Plan B" more than made up for that in Spades...get it? We will try for the Spadefish again on Thursday, May 29th. Hopefully, they will be biting by then!

By Capt. Jim Brincefield d/b/a "Jil Carrie" Charter FishingToday we did a private charter trip for David & Johnny Crudup, family and friends for a total of 11 anglers. This was our first Atlantic Croaker (a/k/a "Hardhead") bottom fishing trip of the season. Capt. Timothy P. Cannon of Virginia Beach, VA served as 1st Mate. We fished at the small boat channel of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel in The Chesapeake Bay. The weather was decent although a persistent WNW wind kept things a bit choppy. It was a fantastic bite as we loaded the coolers with fat, juicy, succulent Hardhead destined for the frying pan! We also caught a horde of Oyster Toads (a/k/a "Mother In Law Fish" - "MILF"), several undersized Black Sea Bass (all released)and 1 hideous Conger Eel. We caught our fish on Fishbites and cut Squid strips fished from standard bottom rigs. It was nice to have a successful 1st Bay trip of the year and we are looking forward to a productive Summer at the CBBT! Maybe we will get some Gray Trout to come in this year to supplement the Hardhead bite. There are rumours of some Norfolk Spot working their way North so hopefully they will start biting soon.

By Capt. Jim Brincefield d/b/a "Jil Carrie" Charter FishingToday we did a walk on (a/k/a "put together") extreme extreme long range deep drop trip for a total of 10 anglers. The soon to be retired and 2007 No. 1 VA angler (tied with Dr. Julie Ball) Capt. Darren "The Chief" Foster served as cocaptain and Capt. Mark "The Tilefish Slayer" Wray served as 1st Mate. First thing in the morning at 0400 - the three of us diligently questioned the boarding anglers concerning the presence of any possible yellow contraband to avoid the hideous curse we had aboard on our last voyage. This diligence paid off in a HUGE way. We started out Sea Bassin' at The Triangles and it was much better than our last trip. We kept a respectable 94 corpulent keeper Black Sea Bass up to 4.5 pounds for the first portion of our scheule. We also released a bunch of undersized BSB's. We also caught a few Smooth Dog Sharks and a few Winter Runner Bluefish. Then we went Blueline Tilefishing and caught 13 and a few more Winter Runner Bluefish. But the big news was fishing for the Blackbelly Rosefish where we caught a new boat record 53 BBR's and one Wreckfish about 20 pounds (which won the big fish pool for "The Chief"). We also caught a few more Winter Runner Bluefish. But the big news was we caught a new IGFA World Record Blackbelly Rosefish! Congratulations to the angler - Mr. William C. Davis of Forestville, MD for his new World Record - 4 pounds 3 ounces - weighed in by "The Professor" - Capt. Steve "The Sea Bass Slayer" Wray upon our return to the wharf at Long Bay Pointe Bait & Tackle. The overall length on this new World Record was 18 3/4" and 14 1/4" girth! Our local Virginia Beach Area International Game FishAssociation Representative - Dr. Julie Ball was on hand to certify the catch and to assist with the application process. Thanks to Capt. Steve and Dr. Julie for their assistance. This is our seventh All Tackle State and/or World Record - Lucky 7 - WOO HOO! Farewell unlucky yellow curse (no sayin' the "B" word) and hello to "Lucky 7"!

Fiesta! Fiesta! Cinco De Horko!
Today we did a private charter extreme long range deep drop trip for Mr. Dave DiGiovanni a/k/a "Papa Bear" and his group of The Upper Bay Bad Boyz Fishing Club. 2 cancellations prior to this date caused their group to dwindle to 4 anglers, so we added 8 of our deep drop regulars to round out the party for a total of 12 anglers. The soon to be retired No. 1 VA angler (tied with Dr. Julie Ball) Capt. Darren "The Chief" Foster served as cocaptain and gordy served as 1st Mate. We started out Sea Bassin' and that stunk. Not many to catch and not many keepers. We only managed a pitiful 35 keepers. Last year we did a Cinco de Mayo trip for The Upper Bay Bad Boyz and we schwacked 'em. So this year we substituted a Cinco de Mayo trip with a "Cinco De Horko" trip with an etertaining 5 car salesmen. The current was so strong it was hard to hold bottom and we got a lot of tangles. Undersized Sea Bass which had to be released added to our woes. Then we tried Grouper and Wreckfishing and bombed out there in a major way with a skunker.Something (or someone) was putting "The Hex" on us. At first I thought it was our good friend Graybeard (Upper Bay
Bad Boyz horking champ) telepathically hexing us. Graybeard missed today's trip and would have normally been leading the cheesing. Then I suspected the absence of our good friend Mike Burgesss (Upper Bay Bad Boyz Cobra Leader)telepathically hexing us. Papa Bear filled in for him admirably I might add. The marine head may now bechanged to The Papa Bear Suite after today. That's IF I can get that smell out of the paint! "Cap't I think we've got aproblem in the head"...ya think???Well, I can't blame the aforementioned because one of my guys pops open his cooler and...you guessed it - forbidden
fruit. ARRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!! Del Monte and Dole could most certainly thank this fella for their stock goin' up -he was hoardin' a years' worth of banana stock! Of course - the aforementioned transgressor was among "The CincoDe Horko" - appropriate yellow pudding paybacks. Finally we talked The Banana King into jettisoning his Bananas (bothinternal AND external overboard. Haitian boatpeople rafted up and plundered the banana bounty.Desperate, we swung for the fences and went trying for some Golden Tilefish and some Blackbelly Rosefish. Mind you,
we've never landed any - but off we went anyway. Fresh off the purging of the cursed bananas we caught our 1st everGolden Tilefish (28 pounds - caught by Ric "Yoda" Hensly) and an impressive tast 47 Blackbelly Rosefish. We alsocaught another mystery fish which gordy is going to give to Mr. Peabody at VMRC to figure out what it is. We also caughta couple of Smooth Dog Sharks, 2 Winter Runner Bluefish, and 1 Blueline Tilefish. So, a very slow day overall, but made much better by catching our first Golden Tilefish and our first good mess of Blackbelly Rosefish. They are really great eating - along the lines of a Red Snapper. Wednesday's trip we are going to search everyone's coolers PRIOR to boarding.
First Mate gordy (on left) hoists our first in species Golden Tilefish which weighed in at 28 pounds caught by Mr. Ric Hensley of Virginia Beach, VA (on right). What a beautiful fish!
