Project Starshine - Contest Rules

A prize of $5000 in U.S. currency will be awarded for the best image of the re-entry of the Starshine satellite. The image may recorded by any person of any nation on photographic film, CCD or videotape. Competing images will be screened by a committee of judges, consisting of Mr. Paul Maley, Houston, TX (chair), Dr. Geoff Andersen, Colorado Springs, CO, and Mr. George Varros, Mount Airy, MD. The committee's decision will be final. If no images are received, no prize will be awarded, and the money will be retained for a subsequent contest that will be established relating to the objectives of the Starshine project. Similarly, if the committee is unable to establish the authenticity of any submitted image, after using the image itself and certain additional information that must accompany the image, as detailed below, no prize will awarded. Here again, the prize money will be retained for disbursement to the winner of a subsequent contest relating to the objectives of the Starshine Project.

Images must be sent by registered mail, return receipt, or international equivalent, to:

Paul D. Maley
DO13
NASA Johnson Space Center
Houston TX 77058 USA

Phone: 281-244-0208

For an entry to be considered for the $5000 prize, the outside envelope containing the submitted image must be postmarked no later than March 1, 2000. If more than one person is involved in obtaining the winning image, it will be the sole responsibility of the person submitting that image to divide the prize, as appropriate, with the members of his or her team. If more than one submitted image is deemed by the judging committee to be of equivalent quality, the committee will use its collective judgment to determine how the $5000 is to be divided among those persons submitting the equivalent images. All entries become the property of Project STARSHINE for purposes of reproduction in any form, whatsoever, and subsequent distribution to all parties, whomsoever. No original images will be returned to any submitting party; however, a reproduced copy of an image will be mailed to a submitting party, upon request.

Emulsion based Photography

To submit a photograph of Starshine's reentry you will need to include the following information on a separate piece of paper:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Phone Number
  • Exact Latitude/Longitude of where the photograph was taken
  • Elevation in degrees that the camera was pointed at during the exposure
  • Direction (compass heading) that the camera was pointed at during the exposure
  • Date and Time of exposure (UTC and Local)
  • Film type, speed, ISO/ASA rating
  • Exposure settings (shutter speed, f-Stop, if B: precise timing of exposure)
  • ISO/ASA use (preflashed?, hot-souped?, Nitrogen-hyped?)
  • Optics and settings (lens type and settings, any special use changes such as extenders, filters, etc.)
  • Development information including any post-exposure special processing (extra time in developer, use of non-standard chemicals, if pushed, post-soup flashing)
  • Camera type and settings (non-standard back, multiple-frame exposures)
  • Color Positives Any film type and size is acceptable
  • B&W Positives Any film type and size is acceptable
  • Instant (Polaroid-type and/or equivalent)
  • Any film type and size is acceptable; If old-style, include tear-off sheet.

    Special Notes:

  • Do not send any negatives unless we specifically ask you to.
  • Tell the person developing the film not to cut the negatives!

    Charge-coupled Device (CCD)

Data must be submitted either as a raw data dump from the CCD-computer setup or as an image file. For a raw-data transmittal, send the data with a copy of the driver used and CPU and Operating System requirements (e.g. data would be zipped and sent with the operating system driver used to interface the CCD with the computer, we would need to know the driver requirements such as Windows 98, Mac OS 8.6, etc.). For image file data, use JPEG and indicate compression settings, or use TIFF format. Data can be submitted on any media (high density floppy disk, Zip cartridge, CD-ROM, Jazz cartridge).

    CCD Multiple Frame

Data must be submitted either as a series of raw data dumps from the CCD-computer setup or as a series of image files. Data can be submitted on any media (high density floppy disk, Zip cartridge, CD-ROM, Jazz cartridge, or can be sent as an attachment to an email to gvarros@hq.nasa.gov).

To submit CCD Images of Starshine's reentry you will need to include the following information on a separate piece of paper:

  • Name
  • CCD type, array geometry
  • Exposure settings (shutter speed, f-Stop, any electronic enhancement or post-processing)
  • Optics and settings (lens type and settings, any special use changes such as extenders, filters, C-mount of lens on camera)
  • Camera type and settings (non-standard back, use of C-mount lens, multiple-frame exposures)
  • Flat frame data (only one needed)
  • Dark frame data (only one needed)
  • Image data (data for each frame must be separate)

Notes: Set your system clock as accurately as possible to either Local Time or Universal Time (UTC). We want to see the actual system time that the images were taken.

    Video Frame(s)

To submit a video of Starshine's reentry you will need to include the following information on a separate piece of paper:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Phone Number
  • Exact Latitude/Longitude of where observation was made
  • Elevation in degrees that the camera was pointed at during the exposure
  • Direction (compass heading) that the camera was pointed at during the exposure
  • Date and Time of exposure (UTC and Local)
  • Camera type and recording settings
  • Exposure settings (shutter speed, f-Stop)
  • Optics and settings (lens type and settings, any special use changes such as extenders, filters, C-mount of lens on camera)
  • Video tape type. Only record using "Short Play" (SP) mode.
    Digital image frame(s)

Data must be submitted either as a series of raw data dumps from the CCD-camera setup or as a series of image files. For a raw-data transmittal, send the data with a copy of the driver used to download the images to a computer (e.g. data would be zipped and sent with the operating system driver used to interface the camera with the computer, we would need to know the driver requirements such as Windows 98, Mac OS 8.6, etc.). For image file data, use JPEG and indicate compression settings, or use TIFF format. Data can be submitted on any media (high density floppy disk, Zip cartridge, CD-ROM, Jazz cartridge).
